members of staff from the BLC have been working together for the last 6 weeks on 2 specific topics in order to share practice, take part in peer evaluation and impact positively across the cluster schools. The staff looked at Marking and Feedback and Providing Challenge in Literacy and Communication across the Phases. The presentations of the teachers’ work is summarised here. The staff taking part reporting it was very useful to work together and visit each other’s settings. Similar work is planned going forward as well as dissemination of the work across the cluster.

EYFS staff forum – outdoor learning

Last week staff from our schools came together for a session focussed on Outdoor Learning activities for children, led by Jules Rogers at Christ Church Primary SW9. As the light was fading outside, staff took the opportunity to go outside onto the roof garden at Christ Church and get started with a hands on activity to light a small fire with a flint and cotton wool on a sandtray – something possible for children as young as 4 or 5 to do with simple clear instruction. Staff also have the opportunity to meet the Aylesbury ducks that live there! The session went on to give staff lots of ideas of ways to get children learning outdoors in all weathers, enjoying and benefiting from the fresh air and freedom this gives everyone. The staff hope to carry on this area of training in 2015 (after the clocks change!). BLC Science Day at Loughborough Primary

Yesterday children from Christ Church Primary SW9, St John’s Angell Town, Jessop and Loughborough primaries joined together to hone their scientific skills in Chemistry in a day of workshops led by Sphere Science. The children started the day with discussion on what a scientist does and what skills he or she needs: determination, confidence, patience, focus, systematic working, dexterity, planning, good communication skills and creativity were amongst the main attributes the children identified. The children and staff then did a number of experiments: making custard slime and PVA slime and comparing their properties; measuring with accuracy to make pop tubs; testing red cabbage dye on various substances, observing and comparing different colour changes and learning which was acid and which was alkaline. To end the children identified which scientific skills they felt they add improved upon, towards becoming our scientists of the future! Many thanks to all the children and staff for their hard work and focus.
