A day of music making in our cluster

11th June was a busy day of music making for the BLC. Pegasus Opera company were working with year 6s at St John Divine Primary School, devising an opera on the theme of transition to secondary school. In the first few hours of the project, the children had already written verses for their first number about some of the things they were going to miss about primary school – including all the sports they do, the friendships they have made and…. chicken at lunchtime! They had learnt the chorus and started work on the choreography. One group wrote about their memories throughout their time at school: Miss Powell, their year 6 teacher, taught this same group of children when they were in Nursery and told me how proud she was to have seen them grow and develop. Jai and Nick, the Pegasus Opera practitioners asked for the highest standards of performance from the children – unison movement, clear words, projected voices. Looking forward to seeing the final piece. Later that afternoon, St Gabriel’s College hosting their annual Big Sing celebration – 5 cluster schools sang their hearts out expertly conducted by Karen Gibson and her team of excellent choir trainers in gospel repertoire. Congratulations to St John’s Angell Town, St John Divine, Christ Church SW9, Jessop and of course St Gabriel’s College for some wonderful performances.
We are very fortunate to have such a wealth of musically talented young people within our cluster.

Stars and Stripes at SHINE -our Saturday school project

Over the last few weeks at SHINE@ the BLC we have been embarking on our new topic Stars and Stripes and everything that is American. The idea for this topic was borne out of a discussion with the students about what America was famous for……Pizza? Hamburgers?…..The Matrix?….Disneyworld…but not Disney films?????! Something needed to be done! We decided to explore the relationship between the UK and the USA through looking at The American revolution with all of our learning presented in the form of a Micro- musical. A combination of acting, dancing and singing packaged as a 30 minute performance involving our very talented children. This is just one of a series of Micro-musicals written by renowned composer Christopher Norton (http://christophernorton.epartnershub.com). We have already begun learning lines, practising songs and making props. We have made totem poles with our parents and we will be visiting The British museum to learn more about Native American history. We have been making yummy American food (burgers!) and have learnt lots of facts about the USA some of these have been linked to our mathematics work. We are hoping to have ago at building a Tee-pee while exploring structures and are going to have some fun bowling, a first for many of us. Look out for further details regarding our performance!

Path to Papers – helping parents gain citizenship for their children

Many people are not aware that a child born in the UK to parents who are non nationals would not have automatic right to British citizenship. There are many thousands of children living in the UK in this situation, many of whom are unaware that they don’t have citizenship. The criteria to apply for citizenship is much simpler for children and young people under the age of 18 and, once they have citizenship, it can often be easier for their parents to apply.

Path to Papers is a new initiative, an online to provide easy to understand information on the citizenship rights of children and young people. This flyer gives more information.

BLC Reception teachers working together

On Monday afternoon Stockwell Children’s Centre hosting Reception teachers from our cluster schools who shared their knowledge and expertise in a joint moderation session assessing children’s work together as the children approach the end of the Reception year. Clare Bradley, Education Learning and Skills Consultant for Early Years in Lambeth, expertly led the group through the Early Years Foundation Stage assessment documentation and was on hand to support as teachers from different schools worked together. It was agreed that the afternoon was a very valuable experience for all participants. More joint moderation session are planned next month for teachers in year 3 and year 5 looking at writing.
