supporting our local community in partnership with London Citizens

On Tuesday evening, 30 parents from our local schools community came to St John’s Angell Town Primary to take part in an Immigration Advice workshop. The workshop was delivered by London Citizens’ New Citizens Legal Service in partnership with Weskin Associates, specialists in immigration, SWARM, Brixton Learning Collaborative, the Windmill cluster of schools, St John’s Church and St John’s Angell Town Primary School. During the evening 24 people received 1 to 1 support from the lawyers and the group took part in discussion and sharing stories of their own experiences in trying to get good safe legal advice. There was also a presentation on how to help parents make sure their children can obtain the paperwork they need for college and work as they get older. Thanks to everyone who helped make this event such a success.

please support our crowd funding campaign!

We are working with photography workshop leaders Fotosynthesis on raising funds to do a 3 year project—192 workshops for KS1 and KS2, using photography to support literacy and maths learning. So far £41,000 has been raised from a charitable trust, but there is still a £15,000 shortfall needed in order to be able to deliver the fully resourced workshops envisaged. We are trying a new method of fund raising, crowdfunding. Crowdfunding relies on networking and social media to invite individuals to place donations. This method of fundraising is a relatively new concept and hopefully will be successful in helping to make this work happen.

If you have time, please take a look http://igg.me/at/shapesaroundus/x/9569285 Any help that you can give to promote the project amongst your community and amongst all those interested in the arts and education would be very much appreciated.

visit to the Houses of Parliament

24 children from Loughborough, Christ Church SW9, Jessop and St John’s Angell Town had a fantastic day last Friday as they went for a very special tour of the Houses of Parliament and the House of Lords with their own tour guide. The children also got to take part in a a simulated ‘child’ parliament, where they were allocated positions and then chose a topic to debate: ‘ban smoking for everyone’. They then designed a campaign, medium (verbally) and learnt about the different representatives of parliament. The tutor was amazing, theatrical and a great entertainer. All the children AND the adults loved it and everyone learnt a lot – we hope to book another visit for more children to attend and one of the other many workshop topics on offer. Many thanks to Miss Longman and Miss McKail for leading the trip.

Staying Power- Photographs of the Black British Experience at BCA

Last night saw a special event for teachers across London to celebrate and find out more about the new exhibition at the Black Cultural Archives(BCA) in their newly opened centre in Windrush Square, Brixton. The Staying Power exhibition is the culmination of of project between BCA and the Victoria and Albert Museum, and displays photographs of the Black British experience in the second half of the twentieth century. The photographs have been used to stimulate oral histories from people who experienced those times. Some of this material has in turn been used to develop workshops and activities. A great exhibition for all ages, and well worth seeing. To find out more about workshops for schools connected to the exhibition contact Syreeta
