BLC Early Years forum meet to moderate

This week Reception teachers from 8 of our schools met to jointly moderate their work on the Early Years Profile documentation. This session was facilitated by Clare Bradley, Deputy Head at Effra Nursery who is a moderator for Lambeth. Teachers had brought along learning journey examples of 3 children at different stage of development. Everyone agreed how valuable this joint working session was and discussed something they had seen in a colleague’s practice that they would try and incorporate into their own. Thanks to all who attended and to Stockwell Children’ Centre for hosting.

Maths Problem Solving morning at Jessop Primary for our cluster

This morning children from KS1 and KS2 worked in teams to crack an array of maths problems and puzzles, provided by World of Maths. This event was part of a programme put together by our cluster of schools over the academic year, challenging some of the most able students in particular subject areas. The session was very hands-on and very much self led, testing skills in shape and pattern recognition, problem solving using processes of elimination and confidence with number. We have some very able children in our cluster!

St John’s Angell Town Reception children go to market!

Last Friday both classes of Reception children from St John’s Angell Town Primary visited Brixton village and Brixton market, armed with digital cameras, to interview stall holders and hone their photography skills. The children proved excellent interviewers and collected lots of material that they will bring into a story next week. Looking forward to seeing the work coming up!

primary pupil and staff feedback from our Big Read project

There has been some great feedback from the 3 primary schools who took part in The Big Read project last term. Students in year 12 at Evelyn Grace Academy made weekly visits to the primaries to work with selected children in years 4 and 5. Several children said they enjoyed reading more by the end of the project. One child reported:’ I liked to take a turn reading with someone in secondary school and I also liked doing the activities with my reader’. Staff commented: "It was amazing to be reminded about the programme the day before by all 8 little (primary) readers. They were extremely keen and excited about the programme and really enjoyed every minute of it". The programme included discussion of the book and activities linked to the text. Teachers felt the programme had improved writing with the introduction of new vocabulary and creative ideas and that children have developed their confidence in reading as well as in speaking and listening. We hope very much to repeat and extend this project next year, if possible with some funding for more books to use on the project, so children can take books home to practice, discuss with family and peers and above all to enjoy.
