On Tuesday 16th September organisations and interested parties throughout Lambeth came together in Lambeth Town Hall to discuss how to support people currently in low paid jobs to move on to better pay and build careers.

Research shows 570,000 Londoners have been stuck in low pay for at least a year and the number in low pay has increased significantly over the last five years. There is some limited evidence about what works in supporting people to move out of low-paid work, but to date there has been little focus on developing progression programmes that help people to earn more, gain more secure employment and develop a career ladder.

Walcot Foundation, Trust for London, The Centre for Economic & Social Inclusion, LVSC and Timewise Foundation organised this event because they believe there is a need to share and generate ideas and strategies about how to support people out of low-paid work.

This was the largest event of its kind so far in UK, and a number of ideas were generated.
At the BLC we hope to hold workshops in our schools have given information to parents about organisations who can support them, if they are in this situation and would like help in work progression.

Parents and carers in Lambeth are warmly invited to an event in West Norwood, organised by the Norwood Food Bank, signposting services for Lambeth families. Coffee and lunch will be served. Here is the flyer about the event.

On Tuesday 8th July evening, ‘super-spellers’ from 4 BLC Primary schools joined Evelyn Grace Academy years 7 -9 in another fantastic Spelling Bee competition. The hall was decorated with balloons, the stage was set beautifully with flowers and the big screen and cameras were ready to record close up the contestants as they showed off their phenomenal spelling skills. The EGA Parent Association kindly donated two magnificent cups for the winners. The competition consisted of 2 rounds: the quick fire challenge where contestants chose to spell as many words correctly as possible within a set time limit, from either easy,medium or hard wordlists (with hard words gaining the most points per correct answer), followed by the last man standing round, where contestants took it in turns to spell a word, and were ‘out’ if they answered incorrectly. The primary last man standing competition got to a nail biting 23rd round – huge congratulations to all the children competing and especially to the final 2 spellers from St Saviours and Loughborough. The winners over all, from year 8 and from Loughborough Primary, held their cups high at the end. Who would have thought that a Spelling competition could be so entertaining! Great talent shown by all, and we are already looking forward to next year’s competition.

This term, families of Nursery and Reception classes at St John’s Angell Town The course aim is to have been taking part in a course help parents in discovering that they have the skills to support their children’s learning and development at their fingertips through everyday fun activities. The course has a maths focus – parents/carers have made simple games to use at home and participated in group discussion around their child’s development through play. They also visited the Southbank as a group and had a brilliant day introducing the families to many wonderful London resources, including The Royal Festival Hall, Jubilee Gardens and The Queen Elizabeth Roof Garden. This week was another action packed SHINE @ the BLC. There were children and tutors in bright green wigs and fake blood EVERYWHERE! Don’t be alarmed…. we are now in the second stages of making our Macbeth Epic and the Sharks group have been rehearsing and learning their lines and filming some of the early scenes. The Lions group have begun to devise ways of recording their learning using Art and music while the Eagles group are preparing a bid for money to begin an enterprise project….. Alan Sugar had better watch out!
Remember Breakfast Club is held every morning from 08:30am until 8:50am and SHINE begins at 9am.

45 parents and members of the local community are currently enrolled on adult learning courses, taking place on Thursday evenings at Evelyn Grace Academy. 2 ESOL courses (entry level and level 1) and an adult literacy course are being delivered by tutors from Morley College. The school is planning to run more adult learning from September, including computing, as part of its commitment to serve the local community and promote learning for all.
