BLC start of the new academic year
The BLC has had a busy start to the new year, beginning with excellent news regarding Ofsted inspection results for some of our schools that were visited in the last few weeks of the summer term: Stockwell Primary and Children’s Centre and Effra Nursery and Early Years Centre were both rated ‘Good’ and Hill Mead Primary as ‘Outstanding’. This week the Heads of the cluster have met and are starting to visit each other’s settings in smaller working party group, with a view to sharing a greater understanding of what is creating the best learning cultures in our schools. We have 2 cross-cluster projects this term focussing on using Photography to support Maths learning in KS2 and a project in partnership with the Black Cultural Archives exploring Georgian history and the lives of black people in Georgian London, through poetry writing and art. These projects have been generously funded by Walcot Foundation, Clore Poetry and Literature Awards and Ernest Cook Trust. This term, teachers across the cluster will continue to work in subject area groups, on defined topics and tasks. Their findings will appear on the blog in due course. We look forward to a productive year of working together.

Spelling Bee
On Monday evening 6 BLC primary schools and years 7 and 8 from Evelyn Grace Academy took part in the annual EGA Spelling Bee, hosted by Evelyn Grace Academy. As always the competition was fierce and the standard of spelling very high, as the young people competed in quick fire, relay and last man standing rounds. After a nail biting finish in Last Man standing, both spellers from St John’s Angell Town and Christ Church Primary SW9 were awarded 10 team points. The final primary cup winners were St John’s Angell Town Primary. Bronze, Silver and Gold awards went to star spellers in Evelyn Grace year 7s and 8s with an over all winner coming from year 8. Every year the competitors show great concentration under pressure. Many thanks to all the staff in Evelyn Grace Academy, St Saviour’s Primary, Stockwell Primary, Jessop Primary, St John’s Angell Town Primary, Loughborough Primary and Christ Church Primary SW9 for making the event, to the parents for supporting the children and of course to all the participants for their excellent work. Looking forward to next year.
Low Cost No Cost activities this weekend
BLC Sports morning
On 10th June, groups of children from four of our primary schools were hosted by Jessop Primary School in a morning of team sports and skills, led by Jessop’s sports coach and supported by Evelyn Grace Academy young sports leaders. The children enjoyed a number of different challenges in mixed school groups. This has been 1 of several joint BLC events covering a range of subject areas over the year, and we hope to run a similar schedule of events together in 2015-16
year 3 and year 5 writing moderations
Over the last 2 weeks, teachers from across our cluster of schools have been meeting together to jointly moderate writing, particularly looking at case studies of children whose work they judge as at Age Related Expectations. The groups used the new National Curriculum goals against which to check their judgements together. This has proved a thoroughly worthwhile exercise and teachers are now compiling a folder of exemplars of work jointly considered at ARE, together with explanations for their judgements, for other teachers to use in their practice. Having actual samples of children’s writing for use by teachers should prove an invaluable source. Teachers commented "Very useful. I found this session excellent – it reassured me in my own assessment ability"; "Really useful to share examples of work with other year 3 teachers, to discuss composition, see different sequences of work and see how other schools plan and assess". We aim to do a similar exercise looking at year 4 writing in the Autumn. Many thanks to all the schools who took part: Hill Mead Primary, Stockwell Primary, Jessop Primary, St John’s Angell Town Primary, St Saviour’s Primary, Loughborough Primary.
