Last Tuesday we completed this term’s set of Master classes, supported by the Royal Institution, for year 5 students. For the last 6 weeks, children from across the cluster have come to St Gabriel’s College each week to learn about different aspects of Maths beyond the curriculum. Topics have included Binary computer language, Special Number – Pi and Phi, Codes and Ciphers and this week Polyhedrons. Alison Eves from the Royal Institution led our session, setting the children a challenge to make regular polyhedrons using a set number of shapes. At the end of the session, the children compared different shapes, counting faces, vertices and edges and concluded – V+F-2=E which is Euler’s Polyhedra Theorem. The children have been very engaged and working hard throughout the series and we look forward to doing more next term.
